Some designs come together almost immediately. Others ask for more time, more patience and many more attempts before they finally feel right.

Mumtaz was one such collection.

What began as an idea for a timeless, Mughal-inspired floral print took nearly two months to become the collection we had imagined. There were multiple samples, colour trials and changes along the way. At different stages, the colours did not bloom as beautifully as we wanted, there were concerns about colour bleeding, and some blocks did not complement the design in the way we had visualised.

The collection was close to being ready several times. But “almost right” did not feel right enough for us.

Mumtaz Was Not Delayed Because We Were Uncertain

Mumtaz was not delayed because we were uncertain about the design. It took time because we were unwilling to launch something that did not completely represent Bichhavans.

When a print is created by hand, even a small change in the block, colour or placement can transform its entire character. We wanted Mumtaz to feel graceful without appearing too elaborate, traditional without feeling dated, and beautiful enough to become a part of modern homes.

That balance could not be rushed.

We continued sampling until the colours opened beautifully on the fabric and every element of the print felt connected. It was a slow process, but it reminded us of something we deeply believe:

Good things should not be rushed, especially when they are being created to become a part of someone’s home.

The Human Art of Hand Block Printing

Mumtaz is hand block printed by skilled artisans using traditionally carved wooden blocks.

In hand block printing, every impression is placed individually by hand. The block is dipped into colour and carefully pressed onto the fabric, one impression at a time. The artisan must maintain the flow of the print while working across several metres of fabric.

This is why handcrafted textiles can carry slight variations in colour, placement and alignment. These are not defects. They are the natural marks of a process guided by human hands.

Unlike machine printing, hand block printing cannot produce hundreds of pieces that look completely identical. Each piece carries its own small details, making it personal and beautifully individual.

At Bichhavans, we do not believe that handcrafted designs should be mass-produced in thousands.

Our collections are created in limited quantities. This allows us to pay closer attention to the fabric, printing and finishing while preserving the exclusivity of every design.

Mumtaz follows the same philosophy. It is not meant to appear in every home. It is created for people who appreciate natural fabrics, traditional craftsmanship and pieces that carry a story.

When the Wait Became Worthwhile

After nearly two months of work, Mumtaz was finally launched.

Within the first 12 hours, we received three to four orders from customers who connected with the collection almost immediately.

For a small handcrafted brand, those first orders meant much more than sales. They reassured us that the time spent perfecting the print had been noticed and valued.

We had created Mumtaz with patience and love, and seeing it accepted with the same warmth made the entire journey worthwhile.
